About

True North HVAC

True North was founded by Josh Hunt, a fourth-generation Ramsey farm kid who grew up fixing things in the shop with his dad and grandpa. They taught him that how you do the small jobs is how you do everything: show up when you say you will, tell the truth, and treat people like neighbors, not numbers. Josh started True North HVAC to bring that kind of repair‑first service back to the community that raised him.

Today, the small True North team is based in Otsego and serves Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, and the north metro. They handle everything from quick repairs and safety checks to full system installs.

Every visit starts the same way: a licensed tech listens to the homeowner’s concerns, checks the system, and walks them through clear options with upfront pricing. True North is both the company’s name and its direction—honest work, steady guidance, and a home that feels comfortable all year.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Here are the top questions our clients ask before getting started.

What is the $5000 rule for HVAC?

The $5,000 rule is a quick way to decide repair vs replacement. Multiply the repair estimate by the age of the equipment in years. If that number is more than 5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. If it is less than 5,000, repair is often the better value. Safety issues or obsolete systems can override this rule.

What do most HVAC companies charge per hour?

Most residential HVAC work is priced with a flat diagnostic fee and a fixed repair price rather than a visible hourly rate. When an hourly figure applies, it commonly lands around 100 to 200 dollars per hour, plus a diagnostic fee in the 75 to 150 dollar range. Emergency and after‑hours visits cost more.

What is the average cost of replacing HVAC?

Typical ranges depend on your home and equipment: ▫ Furnace replacement: about 3,500 to 7,500 dollars ▫ Central AC replacement: about 4,500 to 9,500 dollars ▫ Full furnace and AC changeout: about 8,000 to 18,000 dollars ▫ Heat pump systems: about 8,000 to 20,000 dollars Boilers and ductwork changes can increase costs.

Is it cheaper to fix a furnance or replace it?

It is usually cheaper to repair when the furnace is newer and the fix is minor. Replacement makes more sense when the unit is 12 to 15 years old, the repair is costly, breakdowns repeat, efficiency is poor, or there are safety concerns like a cracked heat exchanger. The $5,000 rule helps guide this decision.

What is the most common problem of a furnace?

A dirty or clogged air filter is the most common issue. It restricts airflow, causes overheating, and can make the furnace shut down. Regular filter changes prevent many no‑heat calls.
